The trend in universities is moving from the traditional lecture hall to the halls of the World Wide Web, where students are experiencing a new kind of classroom, one that is exciting, fast-paced, and full of rich cultural experiences as they sit, "virtually", among classmates from all around the globe. This study focuses on graduate and undergraduate students' perceptions of the hybrid course format which is a blended course structure encompassing both traditional and online practices. Soliciting the opinions of students' aide institutional leaders in determining areas in which they can improve, strengthen, and grow university programs. In a world where technology is advancing at breakneck speeds and is an integral part of everyday life, online learning is being embraced by students. Consequently, educational institutions must recognize student demands for innovative and effective course delivery that meets not only institutional objectives, but also meets the needs of the student body. The university that considers diversity in learning, supports learning opportunities that are innovated, flexible, interacting, and engaging, and is committed to ongoing program evaluation will see an increase in student satisfaction, thus resulting in successful program development and growth. Whether institutions are interested in creating new learning experiences, increasing access and convenience, or reducing costs, research indicates that providing the option of various online course formats is necessary to remain competitive in a global market.

Investigating the Continued Relevance of Faludi...

In the 1990s, Susan Faludi s Backlash: The Undeclared War Against Women (1992) was arguably of signal importance in the thematization of the limits imposed by the media on the negotiation of gender identity. However, the utilization of Faludi s various analyses, in the interest of rendering social critique, has become progressively more problematic during the first decade of the 21st century. This is because her analyses engage neither with the development of media technologies subsequent to the early 1990s, nor with the way in which such technological developments now engage audiences on a greater multiplicity of levels than before, in a manner that consequently stands to inform their subjectivity to a degree hitherto unimagined. (A good example of the latter would, of course, be the proliferation of interactive exchanges on the World Wide Web). As such, in the light of such technological developments, this book draws on the reception theory of Adorno and Horkheimer, as well as Stuart Hall and investigates the continued relevance of Faludi s Backlash (1992) for the negotiation of gender identity in the contemporary era.

Discover the most impactful and incredible episodes from human history, from the prehistoric era to the early twenty-first century, through fifty of the most surprising and often less well-known places in the world. From the Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, where remains of some of our earliest tool-using ancestors were found, to the CERN laboratory, where revolutionary technologies such as the World Wide Web were developed, each entry shows its influence on not just politics, but on the economy, culture, religion and society, as well as their links to great historical figures such as Alexander the Great, Buddha and Nelson Mandela. The size of the places ranges from small geographical features like a cave in Saudi Arabia where Islam began, to larger areas or regions, like Hollywood. Many entries are cities, such Jerusalem, Amritsar, and Rome, some others are buildings, like Anne Frank's House in the Netherlands or the Confucius Temple in China, and there are even some that are rooms, such as the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles Palace. No place is too big or too small to be included, as long as it has had a significant impact on history.

This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications COMPUTATIONAL MODELING IN BIOLOGICAL FLUID DYNAMICS is based on the proceedings of a very successful workshop with the same title. The workshop was an integral part of the September 1998 to June 1999 IMA program on 'MATHEMATICS IN BIOLOGY.' I would like to thank the organizing committee: Lisa J. Fauci of Tulane University and Shay Gueron of Technion - Israel Institute of Technology for their excellent work as organizers of the meeting and for editing the proceedings. I also take this opportunity to thank the National Science Founda tion (NSF), whose financial support of the IMA made the Mathematics in Biology program possible. Willard Miller, Jr., Professor and Director Institute for Mathematics and its Applications University of Minnesota 400 Lind Hall, 207 Church St. SE Minneapolis, MN 55455-0436 612-624-6066, FAX 612-626-7370 miller@ima.umn.edu World Wide Web: v PREFACE A unifying theme in biological fluid dynamics is the interaction of moving, elastic boundaries with a surrounding fluid. A complex dynami cal system describes the motion of red blood cells through the circulatory system, the movement of spermatazoa in the reproductive tract, cilia of microorganisms, or a heart pumping blood. The revolution in computa tional technology has allowed tremendous progress in the study of these previously intractable fluid-structure interaction problems.
