As non-English languages have been growing exponentially on the Web with the expansion of multilingual World Wide Web, the number of online non-English speakers who realizes the importance of finding information in different languages is enormously growing. However, the major general purpose search engines such as Google, Yahoo, etc have been lagging behind in providing indexes and search features to handle non-English languages. Hence, documents that are published in non-English languages are more likely to be missed or improperly indexed by major search engines. As a result, the need to develop bilingual search engine that handles the specific characteristics of the users native language query (Amharic) and retrieves documents in both Amharic and English languages becomes more apparent. In this work, we designed a model for an Amharic-English Bilingual Search Engine and developed a bilingual Web search engine based on the model that enables Web users for finding the information they need in Amharic and English languages.

The papers comprising this volume are selected from presentations made at the 2001 Conference of the British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes, which was held at the University of Strathclyde (in Glasgow, Scotland). The role of EAP (English for Academic Purposes) is increasingly important, as higher education institutions consider their linguistic support strategies (both for native and non-native speakers of English), and confront the potential of the world wide web as a scholarly and pedagogic resource. The articles collected consider EAP - as an international profession - from a number of vital and relevant perspectives including practical pedagogy, research, and the impact of new technology.

Since the beginning of the Internet, its features have been used to communicate knowledge between researchers in different universities or scientific laboratories, and later, with the increasing growth of the World Wide Web, knowledge became a collective good shared by its users. The current investigation has three main objectives: to describe the professional web forum as a discursive subgenre of the web, to illustrate the mechanism of knowledge transmission on the professional web forums, and to observe the variation across languages of the professional web forum as a subgenre of the knowledge transmission process. The analysed material consists in a comparable texts corpus, organised in five sub-corpora, in function of the language the participants in the web forums use to communicate: English, Spanish, French, Romanian, and Catalan. The analysis of the linguistic material of the professional web forum corpus provides essential information concerning the discursive features of the knowledge transmission process in different languages.
