Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, has been hailed by Time magazine as one of the 100 greatest minds of this century. His creation has already changed the way people do business, entertain themselves, exchange ideas, and socialize with one another. With new online businesses and communities forming every day, the impact of Berners-Lee´s creation has yet to be fully realized. In Weaving the Web, this low-profile genius tells his own story of the Web´s origins - from its radical introduction and the creation of the now ubiquitous ´´www´´ and ´´http´´ acronyms to how he sees the future development of this revolutionary medium. Berners-Lee offers insights to help listeners understand the true nature of the Web, enabling them to use it to their fullest advantage. He shares his views on such critical issues as censorship, privacy, and the increasing power of software companies in the online world. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Tim Berners-Lee. There´s always been something universalizing about the Internet. The World Wide Web has seemed both inherently singular and global, a sort of ethereal United Nations. But today, as Scott Malcomson contends in this concise, brilliant investigation, the Internet is cracking apart into discrete groups no longer willing, or able, to connect. The implications of this shift are momentous. Malcomson traces the way the Internet has been shaped by government needs since the 19th century - above all, the demands of the US military and intelligence services. From World War I cryptography and spying to weapons targeting against Hitler and then Stalin, the monolithic aspect of the digital network was largely determined by its genesis in a single, state-sponsored institution. In the 1960s, internationalism and openness were introduced by the tech pioneers of California´s counter-culture, the seed bed for what became Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Apple. But in the last 15 years, security concerns of states and the privatizing impetus of e-commerce have come to the fore and momentum has shifted in a new direction, towards private, walled domains, each vying with the other in an increasingly fragmented system, in effect a ´´Splinternet´´. Because the Internet today surrounds us so comprehensively, it´s easy to regard the way it functions as a simple given, part of the natural order of things. Only by stepping back and scrutinizing the evolution of the system can we see the Internet for what it is - a contested, protean terrain, constantly evolving as different forces intervene to drive it forward. In that vital exercise, Malcomson´s elegant, erudite account will prove invaluable. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jonathan Yen. What if the real power of the Web lay not in the technology behind it, but in the profound changes it brings to the way people interact with business? And what if these changes were altering the nature of your company as profoundly as they have changed your markets? With language as sharp and compelling as the observations, www.cluetrain.com burst unexpectedly onto the scene with 95 Theses to ignite a vibrant and viral conversation making hash of corporate assumptions about the nature of online business. Provocative, outrageous, and wickedly smart, the manifesto has challenged executives from Global 1000 companies to sign-on or risk missing a genuine revolution. Expanding on ideas and insights first nailed up on the Web, The Cluetrain Manifesto both signals and explores a sea change already nearing flood tide in today´s wired world. Through the Internet, people are discovering new ways to share relevant knowledge with blinding speed. As a result, markets are getting smarter faster than most companies. Whether management understands it or not, networked employees are an integral part of these borderless conversations. Today, customers and employees are communicating with each other in language that is natural, open, direct, and often funny. Companies that aren´t listening to these exchanges are missing a dire warning. Companies that aren´t engaging in them are missing an unprecedented opportunity. A rich tapestry of anecdotes, object lessons, parodies, insights, and predictions, The Cluetrain Manifesto illustrates how the Internet has radically reframed the ´´immutable laws´´ of business - and what business needs to know to weather the seismic aftershocks. 1. In Liar´s Poker, the barbarians seized control of the bond markets. In The New New Thing some guys from Silicon Valley redefined the American economy. Now, with his knowing eye and wicked pen, Michael Lewis reveals how much the Internet boom has encouraged great changes in the way we live, work, and think. He finds that we are in the midst of one of the greatest status revolutions in the history of the world, and the Internet turns out to be a weapon in the hands of revolutionaries. Old priesthoods - lawyers, investment gurus, professionals in general - are toppling right and left. In the new order of things, the amateur, or individual, is king: 14-year-old children manipulate the stock market and 19-year-olds take down the music industry. Deep, unseen forces are undermining all forms of collectivism, from the family to the mass market: one little black box has the power to end television as we know it, and another one - also attached to the television set - may dictate significant changes in our practice of democracy. Where does it all lead? And will we like where we end up? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Michael Lewis. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/bant/000402/bk_bant_000402_sample.mp3.
