This volume collects papers put together by an interdisciplinary group of scholars, which explore how the two imaginary geo-cultural spaces "Central Europe" and "(North) America" have mutually attributed meanings to each other over the past two centuries, how traveling images of an "othered" cultural space - inserted into specific regional, national and social contexts and appropriated for negotiations of cultural identity and belonging as well as exclusion and colonization - have laid the basis for a cultural essentialism which thinks culture through space and negotiates cultural status through de-historicized notions of place and territory. It particularly focuses on processes of motion and travel which helped to create these images and discusses in individual case studies a wide variety of cultural phenomena - ranging from music to film, from tourism to world fairs - while sharing the common concern to explore how motion through space - whether physical or imaginary - helped shape, crystallize and negotiate images of the cultural other in contact or transit zones where people, images and cultures meet in asymmetrical relations of domination and subordination, and where tourists, exiles, travelers, displaced commodities and foreign cultural practices generate powerful, as well as potentially subversive, visions and imaginings. Thus this volume invites to find individual paths and ports in/between the subjects presented and in a way to contribute to, to follow up the web of exchange represented by its authors, themselves a (mostly) virtual community of researchers.

The Bed & Breakfast industry is growing at an exponential rate in the United States and Australia. Some of the world trends in tourism that are influencing the growth in this market are greater competition, increased market fragmentation and complexity, more experienced customers and communication technology. These factors have created a demand for unique products in the lodging industry to create a competitive advantage. The purpose of this work was to determine the market trends and distribution possibilities of the specialist accommodation sector in Australia and the United States. A series of four studies were conducted to explore the key issues of guests' motivation, guests' satisfaction, and guests' sources of information. One of the strengths of this work was being able to assess and compare guests' perceptions of the B&B experience in two countries. Additionally, the development of a new model to analyse and categorize guests' motives specifically for B&B settings was proposed. Further, the use of the World Wide Web as a field research method is one of the earliest studies reported in tourism research which utilizes the World Wide Web as a data collection method.

With the ever-increasing number of people accessing the Internet and the explosion of e-commerce world wide, there are considerable implications for the tourism industry. Tourism suppliers are investing in the Internet via web pages, advertising and e- commerce, but what role does the Internet actually play in tourism? Before more money is placed into the 'e-economy', it is important to study the effectiveness of the Internet as a marketing tool in tourism. In order to better address the concerns described above, this research accomplishes several tasks. First, the significance of researching Internet use within the tourism context is established. Specifically, theories from postmodernism, post-industrialism and post- structuralism are drawn upon as they frame this study. Second, this research explores motivation and decision making within tourism and how the Internet is used during stages of travel preparation, planning and activities. Third, this research explores tourist preferences for novelty and familiarity in three dimensions, travel services, social contact and destination choices, and examines how these are associated with Internet use.

The book is divided into three parts: theory, method and implementation. Starting with a summary of the state-of-the-art in mobile technologies, the first part analyses their impacts on cartography and pinpoints the missing theories concerned with the development of map-based mobile services. A conceptual framework of mobile cartography is then introduced with the emphasis on mobile usage context. The second part is devoted to the design methodology under the constraints defined in the theoretical framework. A core issue deals with personalised mobile map services.
